Spicy Dal


Ingredients:
Bottle gourd - 1
Toor dal - 1 and 1/2 cup
Garlic - 6 pods
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Ginger - 1/2 inch (or ginger garlic paste)
Turmeric - 1 tsp
Green chillies - 2
Red chillies - 2
Mustard, zeera for seasoning
Oil - 2 tbsp
Ghee (clarified butter) - 2 tsp
salt

Method:

  1. Wash, peel and cut bottle gourd into 1 inch length and 1/2 inch wide pieces or as per your wish.
  2. Wash toor dal once and pour 1:2 water in it.
  3. Pressure cook dal and gourd pieces separately.
  4. When they are done, heat oil in a pan and do the seasoning with mustard, zeera, red chillies, green chillies and curry leaves.
  5. Grind ginger and one garlic pod and add this to the above oil. Then immediately add the remaining garlic pods also.
  6. Saute them and then add turmeric.
  7. Add the pressure cooked bottle gourd pieces, the mashed dal and salt.
  8. Let it cook and boil until the raw smell of dal disappears.
  9. Finally add the ghee and stirr.
Serve this Spicey and flavourful dish with White rice or Roti and pickled jalapenos or buttermilk pickled chillies (challa mirapa kaayalu).
