Anapakaya Vulli Karam


Ingredients:
Bottle gourd (Aanapa kaaya) - 1 med
Onions - 2 med
Tamarind (concentrated paste) - 1 tsp
Red chillies - 4
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tbsp
Zeera - 1/2 tbsp
Chana dal - 1 tbsp
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Oil - 3 tbsp
Salt

Method:

  1. Wash, peel and cut bottle gourd into small cubes.
  2. Grind onions, red chillies, some zeera and salt very coarsely.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and do the seasoning with mustard seeds, zeera, chana dal and curry leaves.
  4. Fry this onion paste in the above oil for 3 min.
  5. Add the cut bottle gourd cubes in the above mixture and let it cook for 5 min by stirring frequently with lid ON.
  6. When the bottle gourd is done, add the tamarind paste and mix well.
Serve with steaming white rice, ghee and pesara podum.
